Why God Made Dogs

When God had made the earth and sky, the flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals, and all the birds and bees.
And when his work was finished, not one was quite the same,
He said, "I'll walk this earth of mine, and give each one a name."
And so he travelled land and sea, and everywhere he went,
A little creature followed Him, until his strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth, and in the sky and sea,
A little creature said, "Dear Lord, there's not one left for me."
The Father smiled and softly said, "I've left you 'til the end,
I've turned my name from back to front, and called you DOG, my friend."

If I Didn't Have Dogs

*I could walk around the yard barefoot in safety.
*My house could be carpeted instead of laminated.
*All surfaces would be free from dog hair.
*When the doorbell rings, it wouldn's sound the kennel.
*I could sit on the couch the way I wanted without worrying if the furbodies were comfortable.
*I would not be on a first name basis with 3 veterinarians.
*The most common words in my vocabulary would not be sit, stay, out and off.
*My house would not be quartered off by baby gates.
*My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, dog treats and leashes.
*I would no longer have to spell out words like B-A-L-L, C-A-R, R-I-D-E and W-A-L-K.
*I would not have as many leaves inside my house as outside.
*I would look forward to the spring and the snow melting, instead of dreading "mud season."
*I would not have to answer the question, "why do you have so many dogs?" from people who will never have the joy in their lives from knowing they are loved unconditionally by something that is as close to an angel as they will ever get.

How very empty my life would be!

Just A Dog

From time to time people tell me, "lighten up, its just a dog" or "that's a lot of money to spend on just a dog."  They can't understand the distance travelled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog."
Some of my proudest moments have come with "just a dog."
Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog", and not once did I feel slighted.
Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog", and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.
If you too, think it's "just a dog", then you will probably understand phrases like "just a friend" or "just a sunset" or "just a promise."
"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust and pure unbridles joy.
"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person.  Because of "just a dog", I will rise early, take long walks, and look longingly to the future.
So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog"
I hope someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog" but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man."
So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog", just smile because they "just don't understand."

A Message From Your Dog

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more
grateful for kindness than the loving heart of mine. Do not break my spirit with
a stick, for your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the
things you would have me do. Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's
sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your
footstep falls upon my waiting ear. When it is cold and wet, take me inside, for
I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no
greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet. Though had you no
home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest
pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your
devoted worshipper. Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should
not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me
clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk
by your side, and stand ready and able to protect you with my life should your
life be in danger. And, BELOVED MASTER, should the GREAT MASTER see fit to
deprive me of my sight, hearing and health, do not turn me away from you. Do not
make heroic efforts to keep me going, I am not having any fun and I can no
longer protect you. Hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the
merciful boon of Eternal Rest. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last
breath I draw, that my fate was always safest in your loving hands.

Why Dogs Don't Live As Long

"People are born so they can learn how to live a good life--like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?"

"Well, dogs already know how to do that so they don't have to stay as long."

WORDS FROM A 4-YEAR OLD BOY WHOS DOG WAS JUST LAID TO REST
